Will I see the Sumatran Tiger?
While Sumatran tigers do inhabit the deeper parts of the rainforest, sightings are extremely rare.
Sumatran tigers are critically endangered, highly elusive, and nocturnal creatures. They naturally avoid human contact. Even experienced rangers and conservationists who spend years in the jungle may go their entire careers without a direct sighting. There has not been a live sighting in over a decade. Our Tiger population is monitored, primarily through rangers fixed motion cameras deep in the rainforest.
Will we see the Sumatran Orangutan?
While encountering any wildlife in their natural habitat is never a guarantee, you have an excellent chance of seeing Sumatran orangutans during your trek with us!
Thanks to our local guides' deep expertise and knowledge of the rainforest, we're adept at locating these incredible primates. Our guides spend so much time in the jungle that many orangutans have even been named, and our guides can identify them through their unique characteristics and traits.
What other animals will we see?
You have an excellent chance of seeing Thomas Leaf monkeys, macaques, gibbons (often heard rather than seen), hornbills, and a variety of other fascinating birds and insects, all within their natural rainforest habitat. Whilst your guide will help you identify and track all such animals. Although we have a high chance of seeing these amazing animals, it is never guaranteed. This is the wild after all.
Is trekking catered for all ages and abilities?
While we often tailor our treks to suit various group needs, a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required for our jungle expeditions, as the terrain can be challenging. We have had both children and senior adults joining us on our adventures.

Travel Tips
Visa Requirements
Most nationalities receive a 30-day visa on arrival. However, it's crucial to double-check the latest visa regulations for your nationality well in advance of your travel dates.
Pack Smart & Light
The less you carry, the easier your trek will be. Focus on lightweight, quick-drying clothing.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While ATMs are available in larger towns, such as Medan, they can be scarce in more remote areas. At the moment we do not have a reliable ATM in Bukit Lawang.
Carry a good amount of smaller denominations for purchases and tips. Some hotels and restaurants do accept card. Inform your bank of your travel plans to avoid card issues.
Be Mindful of Wildlife Encounters
Sumatra is home to incredible biodiversity. Keep a respectful distance from all animals, especially orangutans and other primates. Never feed wild animals. Always listen to your guide.
Manage Expecations
Our guides will cater the trek to your ability to make sure you have the best experience possible. However, remember trekking in Sumatra can be challenging. Trails can be muddy, slippery, and steep. Be prepared for humidity, insects, and basic facilities. Embrace the adventure and the unexpected.
Protect Against Insects
Use insect repellent regularly, especially at dawn and dusk.
Sun Protection
We are of course in the rainforest, but the sun can still peak through and the equatorial sun can be strong. Reapply sunscreen frequently, wear a hat, and seek shade when resting.
It's Great if You Learn Basic Indonesian Phrases
Even a few words like "Terima kasih" (Thank you), "Apa kabar?" (How are you?), and "Tolong" (Please/Help) can go a long way in connecting with locals.
Responsible Trekking
Trekking with respect
Our Shared Commitment to Sumatra
Embarking on a Sumatra Trekkers adventure means more than just exploring a breathtaking rainforest; it's about becoming a guardian of its future. As locals who live and breathe this incredible ecosystem, we believe that responsible tourism is the most powerful way to protect its precious wildlife and support its communities. These guidelines are born from our profound love and unwavering respect for Sumatra's immense biodiversity, they are the foundation of a truly meaningful journey.
Why Ethical Trekking Matters
Every step we take in the rainforest leaves an impression. By adhering to these ethical principles, we ensure that our presence is a positive force, safe guarding endangered species, preserving natural habitats, and honouring the local culture. Your mindful participation directly contributes to the long-term health and survival of this irreplaceable natural wonder.
Respect Our Wild Neighbours
Always maintain a respectful and safe distance from all wildlife; never approach, touch, or attempt to feed animals like orangutans, as wild animals should remain wild and feeding them can disrupt their natural behaviours and health. Keep noise levels to a minimum to avoid disturbing animals and other trekkers, allowing you to listen to the sounds of the jungle rather than creating your own. Additionally, avoid using flash photography, as it can startle and stress nocturnal or sensitive animals.
Leave only Footprints
Adhering to our strict zero-waste philosophy, everything you bring into the jungle, including all food wrappers, plastic bottles, and any personal waste, must be carried out. Always stick to the marked trails guided by your local expert, as venturing off-path can damage fragile ecosystems, increase the risk of getting lost, or disturb hidden wildlife. Furthermore, leave nature untouched by not picking plants, collecting souvenirs, or removing anything natural from the rainforest, taking nothing but photos and leaving nothing but footprints.
Embrace and Support Local Culture
Be mindful and respectful of local traditions and ways of life when visiting villages or interacting with communities, and always ask for permission before taking photographs of people. Your participation directly benefits local guides, porters, and businesses, fostering sustainable livelihoods and uplifting local communities, which our treks are designed to support. Embrace the opportunity to learn from and connect respectfully with your local guides and the people you meet, as their knowledge and hospitality are a core part of your experience.
Prioritise Safety and Follow your Guide
Always listen to your expert guide, who is your ultimate resource for safety and jungle wisdom, as they know the terrain, wildlife, and local conditions intimately ,and follow their instructions and advice. Take personal responsibility for your well-being by staying hydrated, protecting yourself from the sun and insects, and immediately informing your guide if you feel unwell.
